An up-to-date starting point for Tanzania tourist visas, passport validity, Zanzibar travel and official application links.
Who needs a tourist visa?
Visa eligibility depends on nationality. Most leisure visitors who require a visa use an Ordinary Visa, while United States passport holders travelling for tourism are generally directed to the Multiple Visa category. Some nationalities are visa-exempt and others require referral approval before travel.
Use only the official Tanzania Immigration eVisa portal to check your category and apply. Rules can change without notice.
Passport and application requirements
Tanzania Immigration advises applicants to hold a passport valid for at least six months with at least one unused visa page. Typical supporting documents include the passport biographical page, return or onward travel details, accommodation or itinerary information and payment of the applicable fee. Every traveller, including a child, needs the correct individual documentation.
Online visa or visa on arrival?
The official guidance provides online application and, for eligible travellers, visa on arrival at recognised entry points. Online application is recommended because it allows time to correct problems before departure. Travellers in a referral category should apply well in advance and should not rely on visa on arrival.
Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar
Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar form one country for immigration purposes. A visitor applying online selects the first point of arrival and can normally travel between the mainland and Zanzibar without a second Tanzanian visa. Zanzibar may introduce separate entry or insurance requirements, so confirm current rules before travel.
Arrival checklist
Carry your passport, visa grant notice if applicable, return/onward ticket, itinerary, accommodation contact, insurance details and any required health certificate in hand luggage. Immigration officers make the final admission decision at the border.
