Quick advice from our Arusha team: Travel rules, park fees and health guidance can change. Confirm time-sensitive requirements with the relevant official authority before departure.

Is tipping expected in Tanzania?

Tipping is customary in Tanzania tourism, but it remains voluntary and should reflect the service you received. A sincere thank-you is always appreciated. The amounts below are planning ranges, not compulsory charges, and can be adjusted for group size, trip length and service quality.

Suggested safari tipping ranges

For a private safari, many guests budget approximately US$15-25 per travelling party per day for the driver-guide. For specialist guides, walking guides or private hosts, a similar or slightly lower amount may be appropriate. Lodge and camp staff are often thanked through a shared staff tip box, commonly around US$5-10 per guest per day.

For group departures, guests usually contribute individually and present one combined envelope. Families should not feel obliged to multiply the guide amount by every child.

Mountain crew and porters

Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru climbs involve a larger support crew. Tipping should be transparent, announced in front of the full team and distributed according to crew roles. The recommended total depends on route length, climber numbers and actual crew size. We provide a crew list and current guidance during the pre-climb briefing so guests are never asked to guess.

How and when to tip

Tip at the end of each service in cash, ideally in Tanzanian shillings or clean US-dollar notes. Place the tip in an envelope, thank the recipient directly, or use the lodge tip box. Never feel pressured to tip before a service is complete.

A fair and respectful approach

Good tipping supports tourism livelihoods, but responsible operators must also pay agreed wages and treat tips as a bonus rather than a substitute for fair employment. Please tell us privately if anyone pressures you or if service falls below expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tips included in my safari price?

Unless your written itinerary states otherwise, gratuities are not included.

Can I tip by card?

Cash is the most reliable method. Some lodges can add gratuities to a card payment, but connectivity and processing fees vary.
