Straightforward rules for staying safer around wildlife, on the road, in camps and during active Tanzania adventures.
Follow your guide immediately
Professional guides read animal behaviour, terrain and changing conditions. Always follow their instructions, even when an animal appears calm. Never pressure a guide to approach too closely or break park regulations.
Inside the safari vehicle
Remain seated when asked, keep your body inside the vehicle, secure loose items and do not make sudden noises near wildlife. Only leave the vehicle at designated places or when your guide confirms it is safe. Use handrails on rough roads and tell the guide early if you feel unwell.
At camps and lodges
Many safari camps are unfenced. Do not walk alone after dark; request an escort. Keep tents closed, never store food where monkeys or other animals can reach it, and ask staff how to summon help at night.
Health, sun and hydration
Drink safe water regularly, use sunscreen and insect repellent, and take prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Tell the team about allergies, mobility needs and medical conditions before departure. Seek medical advice for fever during or after travel.
Walking, boating and mountain activities
Specialist activities have separate briefings and may carry age, fitness or clothing requirements. Stay behind an armed walking guide, wear a life jacket when instructed and communicate altitude symptoms honestly. Turning back can be the safest and most successful decision.
Personal security
Use hotel safes where available, avoid displaying large amounts of cash, arrange trusted transport and keep copies of important documents. Your guide or accommodation can advise on local conditions.
