A month-by-month guide to Tanzania safaris, the Great Migration, Kilimanjaro trekking and Zanzibar beach holidays.
Tanzania is a year-round destination
The best month depends on what you want to experience. The long dry season from roughly June to October offers dependable wildlife viewing and comfortable travel conditions. The green season brings dramatic skies, newborn animals, migratory birds and fewer vehicles. Regional rainfall and wildlife movement vary from year to year.
June to October: classic dry-season safari
Vegetation thins and animals gather near permanent water, making wildlife easier to find in Tarangire, Ruaha, Nyerere and much of the Northern Circuit. July to September is popular for northern Serengeti river-crossing opportunities, but crossings are unpredictable and never guaranteed. Book sought-after camps early.
November to December: short rains
Short, often localised showers refresh the landscape without normally preventing safari. Visitor numbers may be lower outside holiday weeks, birdlife is excellent and photography benefits from cleaner air and colourful skies.
January to March: calving and warm conditions
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area are important during the wildebeest calving season, usually from late January into March. Predator activity can be intense. Northern parks remain rewarding, while Zanzibar is generally hot and humid.
April and May: long rains and quiet parks
This is the wettest period in many safari regions. Some remote camps close and road conditions can be challenging, but open properties may offer strong value, lush scenery and a very private atmosphere. Discuss routing carefully rather than assuming every area performs the same way.
Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar timing
Kilimanjaro is commonly climbed during drier windows from January to early March and June to October. Zanzibar works throughout much of the year, although April and May are wetter. Diving, tides and wind patterns matter for specific beach activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Great Migration?
The herds move through the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year. Location changes with rainfall and grazing; no exact crossing date can be promised.
What is the best month for fewer crowds?
Green-season months such as November, early December and parts of March can balance good wildlife with lower visitor numbers.
